Q. What is Mine Action?
A. Mine Action, according to the UN definition as contained in the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) refers to “Activities which aim to reduce the social, economic, and environmental impact of mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). Thus, it is not just about demining; it is also about people and societies, and how they are affected by landmine contamination. The objective of mine action is to reduce the risk from landmine to a level where people can live safely; in which economic, social and health development can occur free from the constraints imposed by landmine contamination, and in which the victims’ needs can be addressed.”
Mine Action comprises five complimentary groups of activities:
Mine Risk Education (also known as mine awareness).
- Humanitarian demining i.e. mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey, mapping, marking and clearance;
- Victim assistance including rehabilitation and integration;
- Stockpile destruction; and
- Advocacy against the use of anti-personnel mines.
It is worth noting that the term originated in Cambodia where, in the early 1990s, Canadian engineers suggested that the body set up to administer and coordinate mine-related activities in the country be named Mine Action Centre, with a view to stressing the dynamic nature of the enterprise.
What do PHAMA Foundation.org users say?
I was so amazed when my son in standard five informed me that he now knows why some people commit crime and that he will always help his friends avoid becoming criminals. He has also been informing us on how to make a home secure to reduce opportunities for a crime to be committed, and many other issues pertaining to law enforcement. When asked where he learnt all these, he told us that there was an NGO called PHAMA Foundation that was teaching them ways of preventing crime. I am so impressed; this is going to help our children grow up with a bias against criminal behavior.
Andrew:
Your training on parenting skills is pretty impressive. It is a sure way and a measure to crime reduction. Indeed criminals are not created but are to the greatest extend a product of a certain parenting manufacturing process: parental irresponsibility, child abuse, domestic violence and the like. Truly the most effective approach to crime is proactive. We also need more of this in our rural areas. If a graduate like myself can not add up facts like; morals and values will guide a child’s live minute by minute towards noble goals, rather than their lives being controlled by self-serving motives, customs, accidental occurrences, bad habits, impulses or emotions what about those with low level of education? Due to my suspect upbringing, I did not realize how strong a virtue Self Respect was- that people with self respect take satisfaction in appropriate behavior and hard-won accomplishments. They don’t have to put others down or have a lot of money in order to respect themselves. Bravo PHAMA Foundation!
Lona:
Your training in parenting skills has helped me realize how to foster high Self-Esteem and Self-Worth in a child to enable one grow into an upright and successful person. Our family grew up empty of respect and compassion for others. This drove one of my brothers in criminal behaviors. Your training has taken me through morals and values as the road to: personal conduct, interaction with others, and involvement in ones career; Conforming to standards of what is right or just in behavior. And overall, they help you to distinguish what is right from what is wrong and inform you on how you can conduct your life in a meaningful way. Thank you PHAMA Foundation.
